Bed Bugs in Clothing Stores: The bed bug problem in this country seems to be getting out of hand.  We had this problem before, more than 70 years ago, at which point bed bugs were mostly eradicated from developed countries.  Judging from recent reports, however, these tiny blood-suckers are back with a vengeance and no one is safe.

Bed Bugs in Clothing Stores

Bed bugs in NYC are quickly becoming a problem for many of its residents.  But as long as you secure your home, you’re safe, right?  Maybe not.  Is it possible that you might venture out into the world only to bring home a bed bug or two with you?  Could something as simple as shopping be dangerous?  Can prominent businesses in NYC be infested, such as clothing stores?

Hitching a Ride

This is what bed bugs do.  They love to travel.  The problem is their tendency to hide within any crack or crevice they can find.  It is common for bed bugs in NYC to jump onto a piece of furniture or inside a suitcase and go on a fun little trip around town or even across the country.  Or, if you have boxed up clothing and sold it to a secondhand store, the little critters may use that as an opportunity to explore a new venue.  Although you may think that only secondhand clothing stores would be affected, it is possible that someone who is unknowingly carrying a bed bug on their own clothes could help spread the critters to any clothing store.

Bed Bugs in Clothing Stores NYC Cause Closure of Two

If you’re still wondering if bed bugs might find their way into a clothing store, we can put that discussion to rest right now.  Not only can it happen, it did happen … right here in NYC.  In fact, two prominent stores were temporarily closed in 2010 to take care of the problem when they discovered that the bed bugs in NYC had found their way inside.

To be fair, this did occur two years ago, but seeing as how bed bug infestations continue to be on the rise, the information continues to be relevant.  This doesn’t mean you should stop visiting clothing stores.  In fact, bed bugs have cropped up at other various commercial locations in NYC and even in the Empire State Building.  This simply means that you should exercise caution whenever you’re in a place where bed bugs could be lurking.
